City council votes to keep Douglasville Police Chief

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -

After hours of discussion, the fate of the Douglasville Police Chief has been decided.

There was a closed-door meeting Monday night and after two hours a decision was announced that Police Chief Chris Womack gets to stay.

There will be no disciplinary action against Womack.

"They say I'm still Chief of Police," said Womack.

Womack learned his fate a week after making controversial comments about officer pay and force attrition.

More than a dozen Douglasville police officers have quit, or are on leave, and many are questioning the reason why.

Hundreds of people came out Monday night to show support of Womack.

“I was truly touched. It meant so much to be in the fight for your life and to not put up a fight,” said Womack.

According to Police Chief Chris Womack, many officers have been unhappy with their pay and have left the city to work elsewhere, but other city officials say the pay is probably not the issue.

Citizens have taken to social media to voice their support and opposition to Chief Womack.
