A father has been arrested in Clayton County after leaving three children inside a locked vehicle.

Police tell FOX 5 they had to break into a car in the Walmart parking lot in Riverdale. Inside the car was an 8-year-old, 5-year-old and a 3-month old.

According to police, the father went inside Walmart and left the children inside. Passersby saw the children and alerted the police.

Witnesses tell FOX 5 there was a huge response to try and save the three kids.

Police Chief Samuel Patterson tells FOX 5 the children are all fine.

Police broke into the car and emergency workers were checking on the children when the father came out of the store and was arrested.

The father has been charged with child cruelty and he is also facing a marijuana charge. The father has been taken to the Clayton County jail.

Police say the mother of the children arrived to the scene. The Department of Family and Children Services will decide if the children can go with their mother.

Temperatures on Thursday were pushing 90 degrees.
