Container Gardening with Succulents and Air Plants

Succulents and air plants are both easy to grow and offer an amazing diversity of colors and textures. Here are some basics of planning and planting a succulent container garden.

  • What are Succulents?
  1. Plants that store water in various structures, such as leaves and stems
  2. They are very heat and drought tolerant
  • Why are Succulents Popular?
  1. Easy care, low water option
  2. Extremely diverse and come in many colors, shapes and sizes
  3.  Blend with any décor
  4. Use a glazed pot that coordinates or contrasts with your color scheme
  5. Clean lines, which make them architectural and modern
  • How to Grow Succulents
  1. Succulents love the sun, but some will take partial sun
  2. Allow for proper drainage – most important step
  3. When planting in a pot, make sure it has a drainage hole
  4. Use EB Stone Cactus Mix in containers 
  5. Arrange your plants in the container to design your garden
  6. Carefully remove the pots; if you’ve chosen plants with spines, wear gloves.
  7. Gently place succulent potting soil and pack it gently around and in between your plants
  8. Mix & match plants based on what you love! OR in small pots, use just one succulent and create different heights & shapes by grouping 3 pots
  9. Use gravel, sea glass, marbles, or river rocks around your plants for more color and contrast
  10.   For a more professional and polished look, fill the container full of plants
  • Air plants are another fun option
  1. Use air plants in glass globes with decorative rock
  2. Use as a name card holder for a dinner party
  3. Sea shells make a great decorative container
  4. Make a striking centerpiece with stemware of varying heights—mix air plants and tea lights
