Agency: 2 minors left in Douglas County courthouse cell over weekend

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

The Department of Juvenile Justice is investigating how two minors, one in custody of the DJJ, were left in a holding cell at the Douglas County Courthouse over the weekend.

In a press release, DJJ officials said an immediate investigation was ordered.

'The Commissioner reports that DJJ investigators have already been interviewing individuals and taking statements in connection with the incident' the release noted.

Officials say they are receiving 'complete cooperation' from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The Douglas County Commissioner Kelly Robinson released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

“Simply, as a parent [of 2 teen sons] and politician [of 2 terms], I am grieved within my soul over this matter. For 16 and 17 year old juveniles to be solitarily locked in a closed building, as massive as our courthouse, in a cell, without food, sworn officer oversight, county personnel presence or access to the outside world, for 3 nights is unfathomable."

Tuesday afternoon, the Douglas County Sheriff held a press conference discussing the incident. The Sheriff told reporters he was 'completely embarrassed' by the incident and is interviewing multiple people that should have provided oversight of the cells. The teens are said to be back home with their families.
