MUST’s Summer Lunch
Most children look forward to summer. It is meant to be a time of fun and play. But for a family struggling to make ends meet, summer can pose a hardship. A child can go hungry. For 19 years, MUST Ministries has answered the need through their summer lunch program. In 2013, MUST’s Summer Lunch program provided nearly a quarter of a million nutritious lunches to 6,000 children a day in eight counties. Thousands of volunteers made sandwiches, packed lunches, checked sacks, delivered lunches to children, donated supplies and money and partnered in a host of ways to be sure children would not go hungry. They are doing it again this year and you can help in their efforts.
MUST feeding the body
MUST plans to serve 250,000 sack lunches in eight counties this summer. Hungry children will receive meals each weekday when MUST volunteers and staff arrive in their neighborhoods with delicious, well-balanced lunches.
Collaborating with the area YMCA provides 60-90 minutes of activity in eight sites in a “mobile summer camp” setting.
MUST feeding the mind
For years, MUST has distributed a free book to each child on Fridays, encouraging a summer reading program. Giving the gift of a book allows the children to receive a keepsake and share with others to be prepared for the school year. Many teachers and media specialists donate their time to help children select age-appropriate books.
MUST feeding the soul
One of the most important elements of Summer Lunch is the love children receive from the MUST team distributing lunches. Drivers get to know the children and become part of their lives. In addition, many bags are decorated with encouraging messages and uplifting artwork.
Partnering with area churches, children in some locations can also participate in “Meals on a Mission”, a week of special activities. The fellowship, teaching, songs, skits, crafts and activities greatly enrich these children’s lives.
