Ga. moves forward on medicinal marijuana study

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Regents University and state officials have signed an agreement to study a product derived from marijuana that could be used to treat children who suffer from seizures.

University officials said in a statement Tuesday that they're going to study a GW Pharmaceuticals' investigational product Epidolex, which uses cannabidiol - a marijuana extract that doesn't get users high.

The plan to have a state university study the cannabis oil came after state lawmakers failed to pass a bill allowing limited medical marijuana use in the state during the 2014 session.

GW Pharmaceuticals is a company based in the United Kingdom that specializes in developing and researching medicines that contain controlled substances and plant-based medications.
