A local veteran gave his fellow army friend the gift of life as he donated his kidney to keep his comrade alive.
Randy Gilliard and Larry Morse met decades ago while stationed in Germany. Morse was assigned to aviation and Gilliard was a combat engineer.
The pair has kept in touch for 27 years, but over the years Morse has dealt with health issues.
Gilliard went through weeks of tests at Piedmont Hospital to see if he could be a donor and found out he was a match.
The two men went into surgery Friday and doctors quickly performed the kidney transplant.
The surgery was successful and both men are recovering in the hospital. They now call themselves ‘blood brothers.’
