TALLAPOOSA, Ga. (AP) - Family and friends surprised a 92-year-old World War II veteran from Georgia on Memorial Day by honoring him and presenting him with the World War II Victory Medal.

The U.S. Navy said Earl T. Cauthen was presented with medals for his service during a Memorial Day weekend celebration on Saturday at the West Georgia Museum in Tallapoosa.

"It honored my father so much," his daughter, Gail Woody, said after the ceremony. "It was beautiful."

Cauthen served three years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones during World War II. The vessel provided perimeter security for the U.S.S. Missouri during the signing of the Japanese surrender of WWII at Tokyo Bay.

The Cauthen family is donating his uniforms and medals to the West Georgia Museum.
