Franklin Co. deputy sheriff killed in wreck

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ga. - A Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy was killed in a wreck Wednesday evening.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the wreck happened around the 163 mile marker on Interstate 85 northbound around 9 p.m.

The victim, Deputy Cruz Thomas, was pursuing a motorist at the time of the accident.

Officials say the accident was caused by a tractor trailer attempting to change lanes. Thomas lost control of his vehicle, as a result and traveled across both northbound lanes of I-85, overturned and hit several trees.

Thomas was pronounced dead on the scene.

The visitation is Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston. The funeral will be Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Swails Center in Franklin Springs.
