Zoo Atlanta joins African elephant protection campaign

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Zoo Atlanta has joined a partnership focused on educating the public on illegal ivory harvesting from African elephants.

Officials say Zoo Atlanta joined the Wildlife Conservation Society as a partner in the 96 Elephants Campaign, which is also aimed at boosting protection of African elephants, educating people on how ivory consumption is linked to elephant poaching.

In a statement, Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King says the zoo is "also a conservation organization with the ability to empower individuals to act on behalf of wild animal populations."

Zoo officials say the 96 Elephants campaign was launched in September 2013 and now has the support of more than 100 zoos and aquariums.
