ATLANTA - Atlanta Police charged a teenager early Wednesday morning in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shooting near an Atlanta high school that wounded 5 people including 4 students.

17-year-old Marcellus Brooks is charged with 5 counts of aggravated assault for Tuesday’s shooting at Panther Trail and Childress Drive, just off the Therrell High School campus.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Atlanta Police officers responded to the area regarding a person shot call.

Officers determined 5 people had been shot, including 4 Therrell students.

Witnesses told FOX 5 a group of 30 to 35 were arguing when someone pulled a gun and started shooting.

Parents rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital Tuesday to get news on how the children were doing.

Shavien Dennis’ daughter who is one of the victims told FOX 5’s George Franco Tuesday night that her 17-year-old daughter was shot in the leg and needed to spend the night at Grady.

Therrell parent Glenda Williams happened to be in the area and helped apply pressure to one of the victim who was shot in the chest.

The news release from Atlanta Police states investigators are following up on information to determine a motive.

Brooks was booked into the Fulton County Jail Wednesday morning, and is expected to make his first court appearance late Wednesday morning.

Atlanta Public Schools spokesperson Kimberly Willis Green said in a statement that APS counselors will be on campus at Therrell Wednesday to support students, faculty and staff members.

Green’s statement added APS and Atlanta Police will provide extra campus security, and Therrell students will not be permitted to carry book bags or backpacks for the remainder of the school year.

The Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners called the shootings “particularly upsetting and distressing.”

In a statement, Chairman John Eaves said, “When our young people are victimized by the crime of our city streets, it serves as a sad reminder of the challenges we as leaders confront in trying to make our streets safer for Fulton County families.”

FOX 5 has received an update on the condition of the shooting victims. According to Grady Health officials, one patient is currently in critical condition and two other patients remain in stable condition. The fourth patient was discharged Wednesday evening, according to
Grady Media Relations Manager Denise Simpson.
