The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning to close lanes on I-20 for road construction.
GDOT is advising travelers to avoid taking I-20 between Douglas and Newton counties this weekend, toward Alabama. The department is advising motorists to seek an alternate route or expect long delays.
Crews will have one lane in either direction closed between State Route 5 and Liberty Road for some work between 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. DOT is urging drivers heading for Talladega to use alternate routes such as:
SR 92 and SR 8 on the north side of I-20
SR 166 and SR 61 south of I-20
Other construction on I-20 includes I-20 eastbound, from SR 138 to Almon Road in Rockdale and Newton Counties. Two left lanes will be blocked off all weekend and long delays are expected.
“We have three projects with significant lane closures on I-20 this weekend, one in Rockdale County, one inside (I) 285, and one in Douglas County,” said District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle. “We are expecting long delays particularly in Douglas and Rockdale counties during the daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday.”
Through a press release the department said they have determined that less people are affected if the work is done primarily at night and on weekends. GDOT also stated that more work is scheduled to take place during the summer when school is out.
GDOT encouraged Motorists to dial 511 from any phone to receive real-time traffic conditions at any time of day.
