Save on Vacation

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA - Thinking about vacation is a lot of fun. Thinking about what it'll cost you is not so fun. Here are some ideas for cutting costs.

If you can get a deep discount then do it, but a big way cut back on the costs is to trim a bit off of everything.

Let's start with that flight.  One ticket is costly enough, but buying three or four can really put you over. Cheapair, an online travel blog, says the difference between the best day to buy a ticket and the worst day is $236 -- per ticket.

Discounted tickets are offered really any day of the week these days, but Cheapair recommends thinking about taking off on slower days like Tuesday or Wednesday.

Out-of-network ATM fees cost a lot money. About $5 a transaction. As they say over at the site NerdWallet  "fees are lame." So, they compiled a list of banks and their fee structures.

But, here's what you should know - some banks don't charge out-of-network fees.  Think about whether you should switch.  A credit union usually has better deals.  Some banks will actually reimburse you those fees.  Then, there are banks that provide a list of their partnering banks so you can get a fee break when you travel.  It's up to you to do a little homework here.

Souvenirs are generally costly junk that gets stuffed in a drawer or box pretty quickly. Make your own memories.  All of those cell phone pictures you take - get them off the phone and into a frame. Maybe make the backdrop to that picture a map of where you've traveled.  You can turn those photos into coasters, placemats, even ornaments.

In a beautiful environment? Take a flower or leaf - press it and frame it. Even your ticket - framed - might be all you need.

And finally, insurance. Do you get it or pass it up?  It is confusing because there are no hard and fast rules.  Let's start with travel insurance.  You are planning a big, three-week overseas trip. Yes, then it  might be a good idea.  Heading to Florida for the weekend? Probably not worth it.

Rental car insurance:  There's a good chance you're already covered through your current car insurance or your credit card. Check before you check in.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
