US transportation secretary visits Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) - The Obama administration's transportation chief visited Atlanta to tour two large-scale projects.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx toured the new Atlanta Streetcar Vehicle Maintenance Facility and the east side trail of the Atlanta BeltLine project on Wednesday. The Department of Transportation says Foxx is traveling the country to highlight the importance of transportation investment.

The first phase of the Atlanta Streetcar is set to open later this year and will run between the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Centennial Olympic Park.

The proposal for the BeltLine includes 22 miles of trails, transit and parks circling downtown and connecting city neighborhoods.

Department officials said in a statement that projects like the BeltLine are important because they create jobs and opportunity by providing better access to work and school.
