Republican Senate candidates to debate in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate will go head-to-head during a debate in Savannah.

The GOP debate Saturday night comes less than two months before the May 20 primary election. And early voting starts in late April.

Seven candidates have signed up for the race to choose a Republican nominee for the seat of retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Contenders include three sitting congressmen - Reps. Paul Broun, Jack Kingston and Phil Gingrey. Also running are former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel and David Perdue, the former Reebok and Dollar General CEO whose cousin is ex-Gov. Sonny Perdue.

The showdown in Savannah the fifth Senate debate this year sponsored by the Georgia Republican Party. Two more will be held in Augusta and Columbus.
