Navy secretary discusses sub replacement in Ga.

Posted: Updated:

ST. MARYS, Ga. (AP) - U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says the service is on track to replace its ballistic missile submarines.

Mabus told sailors Friday that bases in Georgia and Florida figure into the service's plans to upgrade its fleet, including replacing submarines and building more ships.

The Navy secretary said the service is on schedule for replacing its Ohio-class submarines, which carry ballistic missiles. Of that fleet, six submarines are based out of Kings Bay in Georgia. Navy officials plan to start building a new generation of submarines early next decade.

Mabus said the country still needs to decide how to pay for the project. He said building the new submarines would consume about a third of the Navy's budget.
