DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

Several motorists who stopped following a fiery chain-reaction crash involving several tractor trailers on Interstate 20 in Douglas County are being credited with saving one of those truck drivers.

According to Douglas County officials, a tractor trailer slowing for a weigh station was struck by another truck directly behind just after noon Thursday. Two other semis then hit the second truck. Shortly after the crash, the cab of the second tractor trailer caught fire.

Nine passing motorists all stopped to help the driver of the second tractor trailer out of the burning cab until deputies arrived at the scene. Officials say the driver's clothes had caught fire by that time, but they were able to quickly put it out.

That driver was transported to Grady Hospital's Burn Unit by ambulance. Officials say that ambulance continued to the hospital despite getting a flat tire at the accident scene due to the debris. The truck driver was listed in serious but stable condition.

Officials say all four of the tractor trailers received significant damage with the second semi suffering the worst damage due to the fire destroying most of the cab.

All lanes of traffic were closed until 3:30 p.m. and all lanes were reopened shortly before 6 p.m. while crews worked to clean up the debris and diesel spill.
