Police in Athens warn about "arrest warrant" scam

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, Ga. -

Police in Clarke County are warning residents about a scam where residents are called up and told they will be arrested if they don't pay.

The Athens Clarke County Police Department says that the callers report that an arrest warrant is issued for them or a relative due to either a missed court dates or failure to appear for jury duty.

The victims are instructed to purchase a prepaid debit card to pay a fine to void the arrest warrant.

Police say they may call regarding outstanding warrants, but wouldn't solicit money over the phone. They advise anyone who receives a similar call to report it to police.
