Colorado Launch Ads To Remind People "Drive High , Get A DUI"

Posted: Updated:

With a wink and a nod toward those who smoke marijuana recreationally, Colorado is hoping to remind people of one simple point, drive high get a DUI.

State agencies and the Marijuana Industry Group have been working on the ads for months which will be broadcast across the state and posted in marijuana retailers.

"I think most importantly, we need to, as responsible vendors, be sparking that conversation that carries on outside of our stores, says Marijuana Industry Group member, Elan Nelson.

Stats on high driving haven't traditionally been kept but that's all changing now.

In January the Colorado State Patrol issued 61 DUIs for both alcohol and drugs of all kinds. 31 of the DUIs involved marijuana impairment only.

That's why the state is also investing more in Drug Recognition.

"I do feel a lot more prepared after this class. It's just opened my eyes to a lot more of the clinical symptoms, the physiological reactions to the body," Colorado state Patrolman, Darrin Rodriguez.

These experts are called in after a roadside test finds impairment, and their findings will be used along with blood tests in court.

"For juries, as they see it, it's new and so we're dedicated to having those experts able to testify in court so that we can insure convictions," explains lieutenant BRENDA LEFFLER.

Whether it's training or the ads... it's an issue state officials know everyone is watching to make sure they keep the roadways safe.
