Alabama woman accused of stealing IDs in Georgia

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A Phenix City woman is charged with stealing soldiers' identities while working at the Fort Benning hospital in Georgia.

Federal prosecutors in Montgomery say Tracy Mitchell is charged with wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. They say Mitchell had access to the identification of military personnel, including soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. She's accused of using those identities to file more than 1,000 false tax returns claiming more than $2.2 million in tax refunds. Federal agents reported finding more than $300,000 in a safe in her Phenix City home.

Her attorney, Dwayne Brown of Montgomery, said she's presumed innocent and people should reserve judgment.

U.S. Attorney George Beck says wire fraud carries a sentence of up to 20 years and aggravated identity theft has a mandatory two-year sentence.
