"The Slowpoke Bill" to fine slow drivers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Move over Sunday drivers! A new, proposed Georgia law will make it illegal to cruise in the far left lane.

Some people call them "slow pokes" or "left lane lingers," whatever you call them -- they may have to put their blinkers on and move out of a way due to a new bill, House Bill 459 nicknamed "The Slow Poke Bill" and it has already passed the House.

"The Slow Poke Bill" would force slower drivers to move out of the passing lane when they realize a faster car is approaching. In the event of non-compliance, drivers could be ticketed $1,000.

The driving force behind the bill is creator Bill Hitchens, a former Georgia Public Safety Commissioner. Hitchens says makes "common courtesy and safety" a legality.

Hitchens says people driving slowly in the left lane are "holding up traffic and causing people frustration and several incidents around the state that has resulted in wreckless driving and occasional road rage."

Drivers expressed mixed reaction on the bill. However, it needs to pass the senate to become law.

If the HB 459 passes it'll go into effect on July 1st.
