Tech Check: Bungee tags

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

If you found someone's smartphone, what would you do to find the owner? Same thing with car keys, wallet, sunglass and other valuables we carry.

Here is a great idea. It's called a Bungee tag. The company runs a virtual lost and found. Call it a really cool exercise in honesty.

How it works is you buy a package of Bungee tags, and then put the stickers on absolutely anything. If you lose it, that sticker with its unique code can help the person who finds your property get in contact with you.

"Go online, register that code and you are good to go," said Yahoo! tech writer Rick Limpert.

You can also put the Bungee tags on your car keys or slip one into your wallet. Each sticker has a unique code that the finder can be used to send a text message to the owner.

The diagram on Bungeetags.com illustrates how it works. Person loses their item. A stranger finds it, reads the Bungee tag and sends a code to a phone number in a text message. The owner receives the text and an anonymous conversation takes place. The owner and stranger then meet to have the property returned.

About 85 percent of Americans now own smartphones, so help your karma out a bit and if you find someone else's property, give it back.

"I would do it. I think it's good karma. We are all smartphone owners, device owners. I think we have to return something when we find it. And hopefully, someone would do the same," said Limpert.

Again, the price is only a one-time fee of $19. Each package comes with 23 tags and service is good for two years.
