Ga. woman convicted of hiding dismembered body

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (AP) - A jury has convicted a southeast Georgia woman of helping her husband hide a dismembered body that was discovered after a deadly police standoff last year.

The Effingham County jury found Kimberly Moretz guilty Friday of concealing a death and hindering a police investigation. She was acquitted of evidence tampering.

Prosecutors say Moretz helped hide the body of 35-year-old Charlie Ray in a South Carolina storage locker after her husband, Chad Moretz, killed him and dismembered his body with a power saw.

A week later, sheriff's deputies killed Chad Moretz in a standoff at his home Jan. 11, 2013. They found Ray's head and hands in the kitchen.

Kimberly Moretz's attorney, Michael Schiavone, says she was a battered spouse who feared her husband would kill her if she talked.
