Fourth-grader lobbies for school salad bar

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

When fourth grader Leanne Dudash shows up at the cafeteria she has plenty of healthy options. And she's the one responsible for bringing a salad bar to Gwin Oaks Elementary.

Leanne says, "I normally get tomatoes, carrots" She read a newspaper article about another school getting a salad bar and decided to pitch the idea to her principal Tonya Burnley.

"I got a letter back in the spring when her class was doing some persuasive writing. And she wrote a letter to persuade me to add a salad bar," Principal Tonya Burnley said.

Leanne said she wrote a proposal and got more than 100 kids and teachers to sign it.

Mrs. Burnley was so impressed with Leanne's passion for healthy eating that she asked the cafeteria manager to make it happen.

"We sat down together and talked about the pros and cons and found out there was a national program where we could get grant funding to bring a salad bar into our school," Brunley said.

The cafeteria manager worked on the project, all summer long.

"Leanne and I met again in the fall and she wanted to know that status. But we were on a waiting list at that time. So we met with the cafeteria manager again and shortly after we were approved. And now, we have a salad bar!"

The best part for Leanne is knowing she's helping her fellow students get better nutrition.

The grant program is called "Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools." And any public or private school can apply for salad bar equipment to use in their cafeteria is they participate in the national school lunch program.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
