Cemetery Offers Tours Highlighting African American History

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Historic Oakland Cemetery is one of Atlanta's most popular attractions. And during African American History Month, a unique piece of the city's legacy takes center stage.

Several free African American History Tours are being offered for free during the month of February. During the tours, visitors will hear the stories of many African Americans who helped shape the city and are buried at Oakland. This includes Mayor Maynard Jackson, Bishop Wesley John Gaines (founder of Morris Brown College), and Carrie Steele Logan, who created the first black orphanage in Atlanta.

Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken spent the morning listening to some of these incredible stories at Historic Oakland Cemetery. Click the video above to learn more.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
