Fire hazard at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport officials said some airport employees are taking a big gamble that could create a fire hazard.

The problem involves smoking in restricted areas – dangerously close to thousands of gallons of fuel.

Employees and contractors with ground level access who service planes on the tarmac and at the gate have designated smoking areas.

However, that may not be the only place they smoke.

Chief Joe Baker's investigators first issued verbal warnings.

Now, they're issuing citations to those who smoke in prohibited areas.

Baker said there are dangers with smoking in non-authorized areas because of the proximity of fuel and other highly flammable hazardous materials.

Eleven employees have been taken downtown to city court for violations.
