2 women attacked after hailing rides

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Two women say they were attacked by men who they thought were cab drivers. Both attacks took place in a neighborhood popular with young people and clubgoers.

On Dec. 14, a woman who'd just left a bar on Roswell Road hailed a black sedan which she believed was a taxi.

"Instead of taking her home, the driver of that vehicle, the gentlemen depicted in the sketch, took her to a secluded area and attempted a sexual assault," said Sgt. Greg Lyon of the Atlanta Police Department.

Police say the victim got away after he pulled a knife on her.

The GBI released a composite sketch of the woman's attacker.

Six days later on Peachtree Road in Buckhead, a woman leaving a Christmas party flagged down a ride from a man who was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

"This person didn't take her back to her hotel, but took her to a secluded area and attempted a sexual assault on her as well," Lyon said.

Atlanta police say they're not sure if it is the same man who attacked both women. Local establishments are advising patrons to be careful.

"My main advice is to make sure that you get into a cab that has proper identification. If it doesn't say cab, if it doesn't say limo, don't take it," one woman said.

Atlanta police say after examining the circumstances of the two instances, both victims made the same mistake.

"Both individuals were with a group of people and somehow became separated or decided to leave the group on their own," Lyon said.

With the possibility of more attacks, police are urging women to stay alert and safe.

CrimeStoppers is offering a $2,000 dollar reward to find the men. Tips can be made to 404-577-TIPS.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
