Proposal would ban smoking in cars with kids inside

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers in the state of Washington are proposing a ban on smoking in cars with minors onboard.

If it passes, though caught lighting up could face a $125 fine.  Additional violations could be as much as $250.

About a half-dozen other states have already banned smoking with kids inside.

Supporters of the bill say they want to protect the quarter of a million Washington kids who live with smokers.

Health officials are clearly on board, but some lawmakers say the smoking ban would overburden law enforcement.

The violations would not show up on a driver's record or be reported to an insurance company, but some say the government is still going too far.
