1 killed, 2 injured in Army helicopter 'hard landing' in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - An Army spokesman says one person was killed and two others injured overnight when a helicopter flown by special operations troops made a "hard landing" at a military airstrip in Savannah.

The rough landing happened at Hunter Army Airfield. The crew was returning from a routine training flight late Wednesday shortly before midnight, according to Army officials.

The flight crew belongs to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Also known as the Night Stalkers, the regiment based at Fort Campbell, Ky., is an elite unit trained to fly helicopters behind enemy lines under cover of darkness.

Maj. Allen Hill said he could not immediately identify the type of helicopter or say how much damage it sustained. He says the Army is investigating.
