Be Prepared: Have a Winter Weather Emergency Car Kit

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The number one cause of death Nation-wide during winter storms is traffic crashes. At this time of year "Hotlanta" can turn into "Coldlanta," leaving some roads icy and dangerous. Lauren Fix, The Car Coach, says preparation is the key before heading out in winter weather.

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has always said this is a very dangerous time of year with slush and ice and snow on the roadway, especially if you're not used to it," says Lauren Fix, "The Car Coach."

The first step is to make sure your car is running well and up to date on the maintenance. Good tires are also crucial when things turn icy.

"Those all-season tires are really working hard they are not designed for this really cold weather that you see in the northern half of the country," adds Lauren.

Lauren suggests checking your tire pressure once a month using the information on the inside of the door. Clean headlights will also make sure you can see and be seen.

"80 percent of your driving decisions are based on visibility," Lauren explains.

There are a few essential things you should already have in your car emergency kit like, jumper cables, gloves, a flashlight, a rain poncho and a first aid kit.

Add to that list an ice scraper, blanket, hand warmers, extra clothes, basic tools, non-perishable snacks and bottled water.

Lauren says preparing for the worst case scenario will help you stay safe as emergency crews are trying to get to you.

"You could be on the side of the road for hours or stuck in a parking lot for hours by yourself," Lauren says.

Another good tip is to take a few minutes to write down the important numbers in your cell phone and keep that information stored in your car.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
