Police: Cherokee County mother left young kids home alone

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

A Cherokee County mother is accused of leaving her young sons at home alone in a locked room for nearly nine hours.

Investigators say a maintenance worker was checking on a water leak when he found Angel Henderson's 2- and 3-year-old sons naked and alone in a locked bedroom.

"They apparently had been playing in the sink and that was causing the leak in the apartment below," said Lt. Jay Baker of Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. "There was no adult at all."

Henderson arrived about 30 minutes after deputies were called to the Acworth apartment complex, Baker said. She told authorities that she had to leave her children to go to her job.

"Initially she said she had only been gone about two hour, but after they looked into it, it appeared she had been gone since 11:00 yesterday morning, which was over eight hours," said Baker.

There was no food in bedroom, Baker said.

Authorities said the door had been adjusted so that it could be locked from the outside. Investigators are looking to see if Henderson had left the children alone before.

Henderson, 22, is being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center in lieu of a $4,000 bond.

The children are currently in the custody of the Division of Family and Children Services.
