Vehicles searched at Atlanta water department facilities

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Theft inside Atlanta's water department has gotten so prevalent that the city has begun to search all employees' personal vehicles. The employees are protesting the action, saying their privacy is being violated.

FOX 5 has previously reported on major theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment from water facilities. A memo written by Department of Watershed Commissioner Jo Anne Macrina's security director Yafet Bekele stated that all personal vehicles will be searched as they leave the facilities.

The practice poses legal challenges, according to attorney Amy Weil of the Weil Firm.

"It's not much of an option, it's not really your free will, when you are being told your job depends on your agreeing to let somebody search your car," Weil said.

A spokesperson for the commissioner said they have the right to search any vehicle that comes on the property.  Employees can leave their vehicles outside the gate if they don't want to be searched, the spokesperson said.
