ATLANTA -

Very cold temperatures and gusty winds are a bad combination this morning. Wind chills will remain in the single digits this morning as winds occasionally gust to 20-25 mph.

Snow showers or flurries have ended, but icy spots on roads will continue to be a problem. A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect for far north Georgia until 11am to account for ice concerns – not additional snow.

With a cloud-free sky, temperatures will warm to near freezing by 1-2pm for metro Atlanta. With an expected high of 36, a north wind at 10-15 mph will produce wind chills still in the cold 20s during the warmest part of the day. Under clear skies with lighter winds tonight, temperatures will plummet to the upper teens and low 20s (but without the single digit wind chill values!).

TEMPERATURES RECOVER BRIEFLY THIS WEEKEND….

Saturday will start out sunny and cold. By afternoon, a southeasterly flow of air will bring an increase in clouds to north Georgia. Despite this, high temperatures will reach the mid to upper 40s – balmy compared to today's weather! Mostly cloudy skies will keep Saturday night's temperatures near or even above freezing. During the day Sunday, temperatures will warm ahead of the next cold front. It will be cloudy with highs in the 50s.

RAIN TO SNOW LATE SUNDAY….

While a stray shower can happen anytime during the day, the better chance of rain begins late in the afternoon. It will be a quick shot of precipitation, but it brings tremendously colder weather with it. Because of that cold air, a transition to snow showers/flurries will be expected near sunset. It won't last long, but we could see slightly higher accumulations of snow in far north Georgia Sunday evening than we saw last night. Flurries can once again fall as far south as Atlanta. Roads may be especially icy Monday morning regardless of any snow simply because rain will have fallen and temperatures will fall quickly enough to freeze any moisture that remains.

DRIVING TIPS (from Georgia Department of Transportation)

Slow down and stay behind the snowplows. The road behind the plow will be the safest place to drive. Allow at least ten car lengths between your vehicle and snowplows or hopper spreaders.

Do not pass. The plows are wide, and sometimes a group of trucks will work in tandem to clear snow quickly, especially on major highways.

Be particularly aware of black ice conditions on surfaces such as bridge decks and entrance and exit ramps late tomorrow night and the early hours of Friday morning.

Remember that technology helps, but only to a point. Four-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes and traction control are beneficial advancements in today's cars, trucks and SUVs, but they can't take the place of good driving habits and the need to reduce speed on snowy or icy roads.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to exercise caution and call 511 for updated information on roadway conditions before getting on the road during a winter weather event.
