ATLANTA -

A mother was arrested Thursday afternoon after police say she left her 1-year-old child alone in the car while she went shopping in northeast Atlanta.

FOX 5 cameras were at the shopping center near Moreland Avenue and Caroline Street. Several alert shoppers noticed the child sleeping in the back of the white BMW that had a "Baby on Board" signs. The shoppers became concerned and called police.

Witnesses say the woman spent about 30 minutes in the Ross before heading over to the Target store. She then returned later to check on the 1-year-old boy, but by that time, police were at the scene.

Police say they arrested 28-year-old Megan Nieves and charged her with Reckless Conduct. The child's father came to get the boy, the woman's personal belongings and the car, Atlanta Police officers took her to the DeKalb County Jail.
