Henry County police officers barred from having visible tattoos

Posted: Updated:
HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -

A new policy forbids Henry County police officers from having visible tattoos.

The tattoo ban applies to new hires as well as officers already on the job.  Those that have visible ink must have it removed or wear makeup or skin-tone colored sleeves to cover up the art.

"If you have any type of body piercing, tattoos or mutilation, now you have to have it covered up," said Sgt. Joey Smith of the Henry County Police Department.

Police said they made the change after hearing complaints from residents.

"A lot of these tattoos may be up to interpretation and we're trying to have the best positive image for the public," Smith said.

Some residents told FOX 5 that they agree with the policy.

"I think it's a little unprofessional. It gets to the point where sometimes people get a lot on them and it gets ridiculous," said Ken Carlson.

But others, like David Ricks, say each of his tattoos has a special meaning. He said he wouldn't think of having his removed.

"I think it's silly not being able to show off artwork that you decide to place on your body," Ricks said.

Punishment for officers that fail to cover up could range from minimal to termination, Smith said. It will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
