DeKalb County school officials sentenced in corruption trial

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Sentences were handed down Monday in the DeKalb County Schools corruption trial. A DeKalb County judge sentenced former DeKalb superintendent Crawford Lewis to a year in jail for his role in a school construction racketeering case.

The judge rejected a recommendation from prosecutors that Lewis only receive 12-months' probation after he pled guilty and testified against co-defendants Pat Reid and her ex-husband Tony Pope.

Reid, who was chief operating officer for DeKalb Schools, and her then-husband Pope were found guilty of illegally steering more than a million dollars in school construction projects to Pope's architectural company.

Reid was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Pope was ordered to serve 8 years behind bars.

Pope's attorney, John Petrey, expressed disappointment in the outcome.

"We were very disappointed in the verdict itself because we felt that the evidence clearly established that Tony worked within the parameters at least of his understanding of what the agreement was," Petrey said.

DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said the judge sent a strong message with the sentencing.

"That this type of activity that this type of behavior by public officials and people that are entrusted with public funds will not be tolerated," James said.

The judge also ordered both Reid and Pope to pay restitution.
