DeKalb County Fire offers holiday safety tips

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A Christmas tree and glowing fireplace are festive holiday traditions, but they can be dangerous.

Captain Eric Jackson with the DeKalb County Fire Department says there are some easy ways to prevent emergencies this holiday season. The first is tree placement. Keep it far from any heat source and if it is a live tree, keep it hydrated.

"You want to be able to keep the needles nice and fresh. As with the tree, you can tell the needles are green and bendable, which is how you like it," says Capt.. Jackson.

Jackson says a dry tree is a dangerous tree. It can ignite simply from the lights meant for decoration. He suggests bulbs that don't get too hot or LEDs.

It is also important to remember that when you strand your Christmas lights, to not plug in more than three strands into a single power source.

"Even though it is something that you plug in to make work, the chances of it catching fire to the tree are essentially nil," says Jackson.

And before you roast chestnuts on a open fire, it might be a good idea to consult a chimney professional.

"They can go in, clean out the chimney. Get rid of all the creosote which is the buildup that forms inside of the fireplace from usage," says Jackson.

It is also a good time to make sure your fire extinguisher is working. You don't want your holiday season to go up in flames.
