How will the Braves' move affect traffic in Cobb County?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

How will the Atlanta Braves' move to Cobb County affect traffic in an already-congested area? That's the question on a lot of peoples' minds after hearing about the team's plans.

The Braves announced on Monday that they'll be saying goodbye to Turner Field and moving to a new stadium in Cobb County for the 2017 season.

The new location is in the northwest corner of the Cobb Cloverleaf at the intersection of Interstate 285 and Interstate 75.

The new stadium will face Windy Ridge Parkway and will stretch to Cobb Parkway. Traffic is already known to back up in that area during the evening rush hour, and some worry about the impact of the new proposed new stadium.

Some of the reasons named for the big move include the lack of mass transportation, lack of parking and a lack of direct access to interstates.

With this new location, the team says there will be more access to the stadium, more parking and easier access to major roadways.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is moving forward on plans to add HOT lanes to I-75 through Cobb County similar to those along I-85.

Currently Cobb Community Transit services that part of Cobb County.

Cobb County Commission Chair Tim Lee said that major transportation improvements are in the pipeline for the proposed site. Lee said it'll be a mixed-use development with restaurants, shops, hotels and the new Braves Stadium. He won't discuss how the project will be paid for. A soon-to-be-released memorandum of understanding between the Braves and Cobb County should spell that out.
