Mayor's office denies flag being displayed improperly

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Some Atlanta city officials say there is nothing wrong with the way an American flag is being displayed on a downtown city sign.

Members of American Legion Post 233 say the U.S. flag is being flown improperly on a sign overlooking Andrew Young International Boulevard.  The flag is painted vertically with the union in the upper right corner.

Mayor Kasim Reed's office issued a statement stating that the administration disagrees that there is anyone erroneous with the way the flag is shown, saying, "Our position is taken directly from the Federal Flag Code. There is also a regulation regarding flying the American Flag when it is flown in the middle of the street, whereby the Union should be to the North on an East-West Street. (International Blvd)"

American Legion member Chuck Bagley said the administration has it wrong.

"The fallacy is they are talking about a flag, and when you look up the definition of a flag, it is a flexible piece of material," Bagley said.  "That is a sign [over International Blvd.]. The rule of the sign says that if it is displayed, it will be displayed either flat or horizontal and the union will be on the left side."

Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore said that she'd like the issue resolved.

"I have been forwarding that information thinking that it should be a simple solution: figure it out and fix it," Moore said. "And I'm just not understanding why we are just not fixing it."

American Legion member and flag expert John Bushwack said he was disappointed in the flag flap.

"That flag is our symbol. It's our symbol of character and freedom and justice," Bushwack said.

Bushwack said the American Legion won't give up until the flag is displayed properly.
