Friends and family are mourning the death of a Miller Grove High School standout basketball player.

Terrell Coleman, 15, died after collapsing during a basketball game at Action Sports Academy in Stone Mountain on Sunday afternoon, school officials said.

Coleman was in ninth grade. The 6'5" freshman was a standout on and off the court, his mother said.

"He was determined. He was strong. He was so respectful. He was so well-loved and he loved," said Rashones Coleman.

The 15-year-old was a small forward and ranked as the nation's 13th overall prospect for 2017, according to He played AAU league ball for the Atlanta Celtics. He was playing in an all-star competition Sunday when he slumped over just minutes into the game, his mother said. His father and two nurses administered CPR until the ambulance arrived.

"His daddy gave him his last breath," said Coleman.

Doctors pronounced Coleman dead at DeKalb Medical Center.

Grief counselors were on hand at the Lithonia school campus on Monday.

Coach Ryan Lewis, a friend of the Coleman family says Terrell was well-known on the national basketball circuit. He's received calls from people across the country stunned by news of the teen's death.

"It was just…that shock. You hear about it and can't believe it," Lewis said.

Rashones Coleman says her son was diagnosed with a heart defect about a year ago. A physician advised him to give up the game, but Terrell was willing to take that risk.

"He did have a leaking valve and he had an irregular heartbeat," said Rashones Coleman.

The mother said she found comfort knowing that her son died doing what he loved.

Friends said they were planning a vigil for Coleman later this week.

An autopsy is pending.
