For many kids, Halloween is second only to Christmas when it comes to holidays.  What's not to love about crazy costumes and a ton of sugar?  But while most kids have candy on the brain, parents should be thinking about Halloween safety.

Sure, Halloween is meant to inject a little fear and fun into fall-- but if you don't follow some important safety tips, your holiday could be scarier than you'd like it to be.  

Choose costumes wisely.  Snellville optometrist Dr. Jeffrey Hackelman says you should stay away from decorative contact lenses.  He says after Halloween, it's typical for his office to see cases of people who are not fit properly for contact lenses that are part of their costumes, and in some cases, they may have been manufactured and sold illegally.   

The FDA classifies contact lenses as medical devices, but even though selling them without a license is illegal, that hasn't stopped people from buying them.  Most decorative lenses are made overseas in substandard conditions, and in extreme cases, they can cause serious injuries to the eyes.

Make sure your kids see AND can be seen.  Be sure your child's costume fits well, and has reflective tape on it for visibility.  Also make sure each child has a flashlight.  Experts recommend using makeup instead of masks to make sure your trick-or-treater can see well.  

Also, make sure your child wears their own shoes.  Shoes that might belong to their mom or dad will be too big for them.  Falls are the number one reason kids end up in the emergency room on Halloween.
