Cheerleader talks about record-setting feat

Posted: Updated:

A day spent on Google led to a new world record set by a local high school cheerleader.

"I was looking at world records and I just happened to see the most consecutive back handsprings," said Westlake High School student Mikayla Clark. "I clicked on the link and I was like, ‘Oh, she did 36,' and I said, 'I think I can beat that.'"

At first, Mikayla's mother, Erica, didn't think her daughter was serious about the attempt, but her thoughts quickly changed.

"She started at football games and they would do a tumble line," Erica said. "She started 10, then she started 20 and one night she got up to 32. I said, "Okay Mikayla, the record is 36 --you don't have that many more to go."

During last week's homecoming at Westlake High School, Mikayla Clark did it! She set the Guinness World Record for most consecutive back handsprings with 44.

"I don't have the words for it because she said that she was going to do it and she did it," said Erica Clark.

While the junior high school student has the world record, she already has her sights set on a new goal.

"My senior year, I'm going to flip field goal to field goal and try to break my record," Mikayla said.

Mikayla said she'll always cherish the memory.

"Most people can say, ‘Well, I won state, I did this.' Now I can say I'm a world record holder," she said.
