An alleged drunk driver smashed into a Walgreens Community Pharmacy and then went next door for another drink early Friday, according to police.
Witnesses told police that the driver sped out of control and crashed into the pharmacy located the intersection of Cheshire Bridge and Piedmont roads just after midnight.
After the accident, the man stepped into the Anchor Bar, which is located next to the Walgreens, and placed an order for a beer and a shot of whiskey, witnesses said.
"Checked his id, got it for him, then took a shot, drank half the beer and all the sudden state troopers, APD walks in the door, snatched him up," said Bart Lamberson, the co-owner of the bar.
Police arrested 38-year-old Rashad Williams.
Before being taken away by police, the bartender noticed there was some unfinished business.
"That is when I'm like, ‘Whoa -- you got to stop, you got to pay your tab,' because at the end of the day it's all about business," Lamberson said. "Made him pay his tab and made him tip heavily on top of it for the inconvenience. "
Lamberson said that before he was arrested, Williams struck up a conversation and seemed content.
"Either he was delusional or was in shock and couldn't figure out what to do at that particular point: ‘Do I run, do I stay, do I go? I just need to have a beer and marinate on it, I don't know,'" said Lamberson.
Lamberson said that – at the arresting officers' urging – Williams did leave a generous tip.
