Couple plans wedding after devastating diagnosis

Posted: Updated:
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Donald Wiles asked Chrystal Lurry to be his bride five months ago. Now, the couple is working against the clock to make their dream wedding reality after Wiles was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Doctors say Wiles is dying from ALS, which is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. His condition is deteriorating every day. The devastating diagnosis came just months after the pair got engaged. His fiancée said that he sought medical help when it became difficult for him to pick up their infant son.

The bride-to-be is a 911 operator in Clayton County.  She's used to emergencies and keeping calm under pressure. Faced with the possibility of a future without the love of her life, the 32-year-old said that she's turning to strangers for help to help get the wedding of their dreams.

"When you take your vows it's supposed to be 'happily ever after,' but I know that we're doing it to create a memory," Lurry said.

The bittersweet endeavor has gained support on social media.

"Girls always dream of having their big day and finally my big day gets here and then we're stuck with this. I want it to be something that we can remember together," Lurry said.

Lurry says it's now not just about that big day, but every day.

"Live your life because you just don't know when it's going to end," Lurry said. "We got hit with this and it's made me look at things differently. "

The couple doesn't have a timetable yet for their special day.

"I can do anything as long as we can make it down the aisle together and he's still able to put the ring on my finger," Lurry said.

An account has been set up at Wells Fargo for the couple. If you'd like to make a donation, visit any Wells Fargo branch and ask to make a donation to the Chrystal Lurry or Donald Wiles fund.
