GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people visited Atlanta on Tuesday.  The Dalai Lama is launching his tour of public speeches, and the first event happened at the Gwinnett Center.

The crowd hung on every word spoken by his holiness, the Dalai Lama.  His lecture was called The Pillars of Responsible Citizenship.  He spoke a lot about compassion, saying we are all brothers and sisters, as humans, and we need to stop categorizing people as "we" versus "them."

It was a message that really captivated the audience.  The Dalai Lama told jokes and stories, was personable and thousands of people got to enjoy it.  The Gwinnett Center holds about 10,000 people, and organizers expect that to be near capacity, with up to 9,000 people attending the Dalai Lama's events.

The Dalai Lama was named a Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University in 2007, so he has a special relationship with the school.  This marks his third visit as a Presidential Distinguished Professor, with the last being in 2010.  Many students take part in Emory's study abroad program in India, and the partnership is something students and staff are proud of.

The Dalai Lama was scheduled to speak for a panel discussion Tuesday afternoon, and he'll be teaching at Emory on Wednesday as well.
