SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -

Giving a teenage driver the keys and a driver's license can be pretty frightening for parents, but the Sandy Springs Police Department is trying to help ease their minds and make more responsible drivers of those teens.

Teens are known for tuning out mom and dad, but it turns out they listen a lot more to the same safety message if it is coming from a law enforcement officer.

Class is in session for Sandy Springs students after they get home from their day at high school. Officers conduct special classes for both teens and their parents on driving safety.

The goal is to make the new drivers safer on the roads and be more attentive when behind the wheel. Officers coach them to tune out distractions like listening to music, talking to friends and even texting while driving so they will focus on the road.

They use real stories and statistics to try to reach their young ears. Stats like the teen driving fatalities focus on how deadly serious is the responsibility of driving. They say over 6,000 teens die in crashes each year in the United States with over 200 of those being right here in Georgia.

The two hour class is free and open to anyone, not just Sandy Springs drivers. It's held every month and the only requirement is that a parent also attends.
