ATLANTA -

Some federal employees who showed up for work this morning were sent home as a result of the partial government shutdown.

Several historic sites are affected by the shutdown, including the King Center. Thousands visit the site each year to see the home where Dr. King was born and the church where he once pastored, but on Tuesday, they were turned away.  Historic site superintendent Judy Forte said law enforcement officials would remain on duty to continue to preserve and protect their resources.

Georgia's National Guard uses the support staff of about 2,000 federal technicians who will be sidelined by the shutdown.  Major General Jim Butterworth said the shutdown would not affect their ability to protect the state and the country.

A memo by the Department of Human Services says the Centers for Disease Control will experience a significantly-reduced capacity to respond to outbreak investigations, including the annual flu surveillance investigation.

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, all essential personnel like Homeland Security and TSA officers will report to work as usual.  Passengers will not notice a change, officials say.

The 3,000-acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park was one of many National Park Service sites closed on Tuesday.  Visitors to the park said they were disappointed to learn of its closure.

Some workers at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Midtown Atlanta were also given official furlough notice.
