Activist Evelyn Lowery remains hospitalized after stroke

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Evelyn Lowery, civil and voting rights activist and wife to Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Joseph Lowery, remains in the hospital in critical condition following a stroke last week.

In a statement sent to FOX 5 News on Saturday, Rev. Lowery states that the stroke his wife suffered "has caused irreversible damage." He states that he along with family and friends remain bedside in constant prayer and despite her current conditions they "are blessed that she is still with us."

Saturday, several members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference gathered at their headquarters on Auburn Avenue for a brief prayer vigil.

Dr. C.T. Vivian said that the SCLC family is praying that Mrs. Lowery makes a full recovery.

"When you have a massive stroke, you are right at the very edge of things, and we just hopes that she makes it," Vivian said.

The national SCLC president applauded Mrs. Lowery for always being at her husband's side, but at the same time working as a foot soldier in her own right.

Evelyn Lowery founded the sister organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) called Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. (W.O.M.E.N.), in the late 1970s.

"She has continuously programmed various things within SCLC and has always been a feeder of information and ideas," Vivian said.

Vivian said that the community should never underestimate the power of prayer.

"We're all in prayer and we'll continue to be in prayer throughout the entire illness," Vivian said.
