Morris Brown College due in bankruptcy court

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Leaders of Morris Brown College are expected in bankruptcy court Monday. This, while school supporters recently voiced their opposition to Brown being a part of the Atlanta Falcons' new stadium deal.

Bankruptcy court comes after Brown's financial struggles during the past few years. The college is facing foreclosure and school officials say that by filing for Chapter 11 they'll be able to delay the foreclosure process until a judge can make a decision.

The 131-year-old college is millions of dollars in debt. Monday's court appearance is a last-ditch effort to prevent the school from being foreclosed on and sold at auction.

The filing comes just one day after school supporters rallied on campus, saying the school should not be a part of the Falcons' new stadium deal. Organizers say Friendship Baptist Church could take over Middleton Towers on Mitchell Street in a deal to sell the church's land for the new football stadium.

Some attendees at Sunday's rally said the deal for Friendship to be relocated to Morris Brown was part of secret negotiations between the church and the Atlanta Mayor's Office. It apparently includes the City of Atlanta buying the campus of Morris Brown and turning Middleton Towers over to Friendship Baptist.

College supporters said, "Our history is not for sale."

On Sunday, Mayor Kasim Reed denied that the city had any plans involving Morris Brown College.
