ATLANTA -

Residents of Metro Atlanta and north Georgia joined the rest of the United States in marking the 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

Members of the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue Department joined together Wednesday morning at the Public Safety Headquarters to remember the first responders that died while trying to secure the Twin Towers.

Dozens of officers and firefighters presented special flower arraignments in honor of the brave men and women who rushed into the World Trade Center 12 years ago.

"The greatest honor in our proud profession is not dying together as brothers and sisters in the line of duty, but that the greatest honor in our proud professions is living together," said Kelvin Cochran of the Atlanta Fire Department.

At Milton High School, it is a tradition passed down from brother to sister to honor the lives lost on September 11th. Students placed 2,997 American Flags on the front of lawn of the campus to remember the lives lost in the attack.

Student organizer Savannah Bailey inherited the job from her brother, Zach.

"I feel really honored just to be able to go through this and to have all of these flags representing someone's life," Bailey said.

Students at Milton attended a brief memorial service Wednesday morning. This is the sixth years the school has reflected on the day in this manner.

A similar tribute can be seen on Skiles Lawn on the Georgia Tech until Thursday. Students also observed a moment of silence around the Campanile fountain, near the Student Center. Veteran army Colonel David Dodd shared his reflections on the impact of the September 11th attacks on both civilian and soldiers.

The city of Suwanee hosted a unique dedication involving artifacts removed from Ground Zero.
